SCRA – Sepecal Class Railways Apprentices

SCRA – Sepecal Class Railways Apprentices is a special under graduate cource in Mechinical Engineering of Indian Railways for which interence examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

The SCRA was started in India by British Government in 1927 to train selected and intillegent Indians for assistance in Railways Operations. The training is provided in Jamalpur workshop which is the Railways largest workshop in India. In British days, after completion of training in Jamalpur workshop, candidated undergo a one year training in United Kingdom. After that the apprantices candidated required to qualify Mechanical Degree Examination conducted by London Engineering Council. Now days SCRA is a four years training program in Mechinical Engineering at the IRIMEE (Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering), Jamalpur for which the institure has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT Mesra Ranchi. In training program, semister systemof BIT Mesra is folowd and workshop sessions are done during holidays at BIT Mesra.

UPSC conduct a competetive entrance examination for SCRA in which approximate 2 lacks students apply. Numbet of seats in SCRA are approximate 10. The selection process comprises of written examination, personal interview and medical examination. Written examination comprises of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, General Knowledge, English Language and Psychological Test. Short-listed candidates called for personal interview. The standard of examinationis of class XII CBSE. As per the guidelines of Mynistry of Railways the entrance exam is conducted once in two years.

During training students get stipend of INR 9100 with dearness allowance every month. Apart form this medical facility, privelege passes and PTOs also provided by Indian railways.

After comletion of aprentice students consumed in Indian Railways Services of Mechinical Engineering as Officers.
